Meet Dr. Erik Nilssen
Hi, I’m Dr. Erik Nilssen of the Orthopedic Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Center in Pensacola, Florida.
I’m a board certified orthopedic surgeon, and I did my medical school training at University of South Florida in Tampa.
After that, I did an orthopedic five-year residency at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. McGill is recognized worldwide for their orthopedic innovations and advancements. It was a great place to learn the future of orthopedic surgery.
I then completed two more fellowships in Birmingham, Alabama under the direction of world-renowned Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. I did a sports medicine fellowship first, then did a second fellowship in foot and ankle with the hopes of bringing a sports medicine flavor into the foot and ankle space.
I’ve been in private practice for 14 years. I’ve been driven to be in private practice. I think it forces physicians to optimize patient care and their experience. When you are in a private practice, you are even more concerned about your patients care and experience that you are offering.
I think as physicians, we’re tasked to solve the core healthcare problems of cost, quality and access. I think it’s important that we’re cost effective, provide the best quality and give everybody access. Good doctors are good technicians. That’s what we do. I think the best doctors wear two additional hats and those hats are one of a care manager and also one of an entrepreneur.
The entrepreneur hat is what drives innovation and creativity in finding ways to deliver value, quality care, and access. And I think that’s what’s led to introducing peripheral nerve stimulation into the orthopedic space.
